It is a specially treated water compound. Don’t just put tap water in your unit! You will need to fill with distilled water, and possibly a special rust inhibitor compound.

First, you must ask yourself why you’re needing to fill the kettle. If it’s leaking, I very highly recommend that you have a service technician look at the unit. Typically the unit will leak from safety valve. A steam jacketed kettle with an improperly working safety valve is basically a bomb waiting to explode. I’m not exaggerating.

Here’s a manual where you will find fill directions.

This particular manufacturer suggests using a common rust inhibitor that can be purchased at an automotive store. Check the manual (where this is recommended) for more information.

    I hope this helps!

I believe that today you would be hard pressed to get boiler compound at a auto store. Aluminum radiators and special antifreeze’s have superseded there need in the auto industry.  However, most plumbing houses do carry it..
