The heat shield on top of the unit is made so that the air being blown by the fan is drawn through the heat shield to keep cool enough to touch, but if the fan is backwards then the fan will be doing the opposite and blowing the hot air into the control compartment. The older fans had a brown label on them, the brown label fans should have the label facing down during install, but the new fans have a blue label as shown on techdanc’s post, which the label should be facing up. So when someone replaces the fan they think the label should face the same way, but in fact you need to locate the arrow on the fan and points in the direction of air flow and verify that the fan will blowing air out the control compartment instead of in to the control compartment.
