How do you keep your wood from splitting in the middle?

What kind of wood? What use? What dimension? And what size fastener.

Depends on the wood in question and its purpose. This is a common issue with harder woods and softer woods. To avoid splitting I would recommend pre-drilling a pilot hole smaller than the fastener which will avoid splitting and still allow for the fastener to grip and secure.

Cordless Junkie is correct on this. To determine the drill size, measure the shank diameter between the threads. Also be aware that the moisture content of the wood is a big factor on this. The dryer the wood, the easier it will split.
