Convotherm 4 gas unit loud poping sound, we had experience this problems about 1 year, the newly installed unit after few day already got the loud poping sound, we had try adjust burner, gas pressure test but the problem not solved. I had read the blog here, and the loud gun shot happen due to ignation electrode.

Thanks for the biggest help, but still confuse why the new unit just installed can have this problems even the ignation is new.

Below this 2 picture is from 2 different gas unit c412. 20GB & c420. 10GB one is melted down and one is just look like corrosion.

Can you give me the serial number so I know the manufacture date? What type of gas? What is the gas pressure at the valve? Are you familiar with adjusting this type of gas combustion system? What diameter is the gas line? What else is on the supply along with the oven?

Once I get all this, I can tell you why the oven doesn’t run correctly. When you get a new igniter, set the gap at 4mm, If you have an EasyTouch control, you can turn on the burners to adjust the gas valve. EasyDial is the same but more difficult and if you don’t have a tech manual, you won’t know where to find the settings. the manual is on the convotherm.com website.

<div>Oh man, may the lord watch over you on this thing.</div>

Depending on the age of that igniter, Convotherm has released 3 or 4 igniters since I got my oven 4 years ago and each igniter was to handle some different problem.

For me, every time I had a “gunshot” or loud pop noise, it was an igniter badly out of shape.

The fact that it is new won’t save you, I can vouch for that, I had problems 6 months into mine that required so many service calls it wasn’t funny anymore.

Best thing you can do is keep an eye on the wall of the oven where the burner mounts, make sure to replace the seals every time you pull the burner and keep the nuts on the flange tight, a flame leak or heat leak can be catastrophic.

You may also need to check your burner calibration with a flue analyzer, if you have one.

I’ve been through just about anything and everything on the burners and heat exchangers on the Convotherm 4.

for this C4ED12.20GB at other place we had replace boiler ignition electrode last week and tested ok, today after 4 day customer call said got loud popping sound this morning. They said had using bake mode, is the bake mode ignition electrode also need to be replace. i am to worried to open bake burner as its look complicated ,please advise me:)

Well, the boiler is one thing, the burner is generally what I would imagine would cause the loudest noises due to the heat exchanger essentially being a giant Tuba.

You just pull the ignition module/blower assembly off, there’s 2 screws on the bottom of the flange and a cute clip that holds it together.

Then hang it using a zip tie, disconnect the wires before doing that so you don’t rip anything, hang it in a nice arc so the gas line doesen’t kink.

MAKE SURE THE UNIT IS COLD

Then undo the nuts on the burner mounting plate, there’s 12 or so of them, the unit has to be cold or the nuts will bind up and you’ll snap the bolt.

Then pull the burner out and you can replace the igniter assembly, I imagine it’s the same as the boiler in terms of replacing, my units are spritzers so I don’t have a boiler.

Then replace the gasket, allways replace the gasket for the burner, if it leaks, it’s bad for your oven, believe me.

If you see any trails of water or calcium “Growing” out of the flange or inbetween the gasket or anything of the sort, the heat exchanger may be cracked.

    Hopefully that helps.

I wouldn’r recommend adjusting anything on the burner in terms of gas to air mix without a flue anazlyer, you don’t know if it’s good or bad.

    Znr90,

If you don’t have a gas analyzer, you will never set the burn correctly, this will make the igniter fail and then the heat exchanger will begin to degrade until failure. Depending on the gas, LPG can be many varieties and the oven has to been set for it to run on that gas. The combustion system is fairly complicated and if you are not trained on any gas systems, you could harm the oven and yourself. Only trained technicians should be working on them.

      I agree with him.

It’s easy to break but hard to fix.

I generally never, ever mess with gas and air ratio mixes unless I’m 100% sure that’s the problem.

Which is not your case from the sound of it.

Znr90; I want to caution you here on this. All Combi-ovens are delicate high tech machines. One should either get training or have a service contract with the manufacturer. They require proper, repeat proper maintenance monthly by someone with training to do that maintenance. And be able to recognize a serious problem that requires a trained tech. Not doing so will cost a lot of money and provide less than satisfactory results from you oven.
