If there is a refrigerant leak, then most likely the “refrigerator” or small appliance is not going to cool.
If you leave the food in refrigerator that is over 40 degrees, then your food will spoil.
As for a walk in cooler there is so much air moving and people in and out, that you wouldn’t run that risk there either. Yet again your cooler is going to be over 40 degrees and the food will go bad from that.
It all depends on the refrigerant and lubricant in the system. Food products are supposed to be sealed before placing in a cooler. So actual contact would depend on time as well as seal/container porosity. All evaporators have some mold, bacteria, and airborne dirt in them. That’s why a cooler will smell if it gets to warm. The mold and bacteria growth is held at bay due to the temp.
