  • Quick warning about spam private messages on the site…

Posted by techtownmayor on December 8, 2019 at 12:34 pm

Every now and then, some unscrupulous types will sign up to boards like ours and send out spam private messages.

In most cases, they will have a very sad and convincing sounding story, and will ask you to send them an email to “chat” some more.

Please ignore and delete these members. While our site technology can (and does) prevent a lot of these accounts from being able to do damage, some do make it through. Never click links from then in their messages and don’t reply to anything they post. As soon as we see this type of activity, the member is blocked then removed.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t.

    Thanks for that.

I’ll also suggest that those who post here don’t share their email addresses in their post on the open forum.

That might seem like a no-brainer, but some folks have done that in the past.

    OH!

So, I just so happened to check my email.  Someone claiming to be “coopermarie” contacted me through a message via TechTown.

I see now.  Phishing by using a pretty face in a military uniform.

Indeed. Many of these spammers will use religion or the military to get more victims. I’ve upped the rules on messaging and should hopefully no longer see situations like this.

Apologies to all for the inconvenience, it is sadly just part of online communities. If anyone needs any help dealing with the messages, please contact me or open a support ticket (top left).

      Thanks!
