    Rational Cooking Center Backfiring!

I have a G2SH15102481866 Self Cooking Center and just about every part has been replaced from the heat exchangers, ignition modules, and more.  The oven especially in combi mode backfires so load it will drop you to the ground.  Our certified repair company (2 of them) have replaced every part inside and blamed it on the gas company which has normal pressure and volume to run our ovens.  They also changed the gas lines to a 1” and have placed a beta test on our ovens for monitoring.  Any help or anyone with the same issue?

Backfiring from what I understand would be a result of unspent gas ignition later or a delayed ignition possibly sounding like a backfire.

Did anyone test your exhaust with an exhaust meter, check the service manual from Rational and see what the readings should be?

I know on Convotherm, I had to calibrate the gas valves since it’s mainly determined by what your software tells the combustion blower to do in terms of RPM controls how much flame there is in the burner chamber.

If the primary air (mix of air and gas) is out of balance, it can cause this, much like using oxy acetylene and you close the oxygen before the acetylene it pops or if there’s not enough acetylene it pops.

You say they replaced everything so that rules out igniters and stuff but I would be looking into the calibration of the gas valve and getting an exhaust flue analysis done.

@olivero is correct on that.  Rational’s manual is very specific on gas adjustments based on results of a combustion analysis.

I’ve had an SCC oven or two backfire.  It was usually caused by an ignitor’s insulator working loose and then walking its way up to cover the ignitor tip.

I mean, I’m just guessing based on what I know from motorcycle exhausts backfiring and what I know of critical calibrations…..

Funny how things can match up,

    Some questions:

Your serial number is missing its third (or fourth) digit, but I’m guessing there’s supposed to be a 1 or a 2 in the fourth position, making it either a floor-model 201 or 202.  They both have TWO air heat exchanger, while countertop models only have one.  You said the heat exchangers (plural) were replaced, so I assume that means BOTH air heat exchangers.  Are you certain the backfiring isn’t from the STEAM generator heat exchanger instead of the ones for air? From your serial number, I see that your oven was manufactured Oct 2015…making it over four years old.  The metal-mesh burners used in those ovens can get quite dirty over time and must cleaned whenever they’re out for repairs.  Did your certified repair company do that?

the comments about flu gas analysis others have made is correct. i would assume if two rational service companies have been on it , that would have been done.   also a new burner with intregal ignitor design has just been released to deal with this issue . has that been done ?

    this is an sccwe102 unit?

Is this popping happening during the call for heat or at the end of call?

Thanks everyone…all that has been mentioned has been calibrated, replaced or adjusted.  Between 2 “certified” rational repair companies, Rational, and the gas company nothing seemed to fix the issue.  The latest was the wiring harness for both blowers which fixed it for about 45 minutes so back to square one.

okay, but did they actually do a flue analysis?
