  • Which meter is good?

Posted by salm on November 30, 2022 at 12:13 am

I want a meter for DIY automotive use, specialy for cars and trucks. Wanna know which multimeter should i select by list given below(1) . I have a limited budget so don’t have more choice. A auto meter with basic parameters will be enough for me.

There are many suitable multimeters on the market. It depends on your budget and specific needs. Some popular brands include Fluke, Klein, and testo 760-3 digital multimeter. It’s always a good idea to read reviews and compare features before purchasing.

Really depends on what you are using it for…if I’m testing automotive I like using craftsman multimeter but troubleshooting home or installing new wire to a existing panel then I prefer fluke or Klein .

Old discussion I know but for me I used to always go for Avo, Fluke or Robin meters but a while back I bought a Klein clamp meter & find it really good for pretty much everything. A few months ago when I wanted a new voltage / continuity tester I bought one under the Testo brand & that’s become my go to for basic fault finding, more recently I found a new Testo multimeter for a really good price and bought it. After using the Testo kit for a few months now, it’s become my favourite kit for everyday field service.

I usually go for a fluke or fieldpiece

Fluke are excellent meters but pretty expensive over here in the UK, even second hand.

Never tried the fieldpiece but heard good things about them.

If you’re going to use this tool for strictly motor vehicles, you may want to explore Power Probe. A very handy and safe tool for troubleshooting vehicles. You can even power test circuits and grounds with this tool to help rapidly find a open section.

Power probes are pretty good kit but for DIY use there are some cheaper options on offer that do pretty much the same thing but at about 1/3 to 1/2 the price. I’ve had mine for a few years and got good service out of it, I’ll pull it out of it’s box tomorrow and post up the make and model.

Just an update: Just looked at the probe I bought, it’s the Autel Power scan PS100, nice bit of kit and does exactly what it says on the box. Had it about 2 years now & it’s done a fair bit in that time and never let me down.
