How to Run Hardware Diagnostics on a Winston Fryer: 8000R Series Controller

Trying to find out what’s wrong with a commercial fryer? Sometimes the test you need to run is easier than you realize. This guide is going to walk you through how to run hardware diagnostics on a Winston fryer with an 8000R series controller.
Winston Fryer Hardware Diagnostics
Step 1. Access the hardware diagnostics menu – To enter the menu and begin diagnostics, press and hold the program and enter buttons at the same time and flip the power switch to on. Then press the exit cool button 5 times. SYSTEM UPDATE should display on the controller.Â
Step 2. Scroll to hardware diagnostics – Use the down arrow button to scroll until HARDWARE DIAGNOSTICS is displayed on the controller. Press the enter button to select this option.
Step 3. Display diagnostics – The controller should now read DISPLAY. Press the enter button and all of the LEDs on the controller screen should turn on. If any aren’t lit up, there could be an issue present. You can exit this part of diagnostics by pressing the exit cool button.
Step 4. Membrane diagnostics – Press the down arrow so the screen displays MEMBRANE. Then press enter to select it. You can press any buttons on the display and all of the LEDs associated with a button should light up. If a light doesn’t come on, there could be an issue. Exit this part of diagnostics by pressing the exit cool button.
Step 5. Analog in diagnostics – Press the down arrow button twice so the screen displays ANALOG IN. Then press enter to begin this portion of diagnostics. Press the down button until TEMP 4 displays on the controller. It’ll show you the current oil temperature. If what is displayed doesn’t match actual oil temperatures, there could be an issue with the probe. Exit this part of diagnostics by pressing exit cool.
Step 6. AC in diagnostics – Press the down button so AC IN displays on the controller. Then press the enter button to begin diagnostics. The display should show 1-111-3. If you see a 0 instead, there could be an issue with one of the AC inputs on the fryer. Press the exit cool button to finish this part of diagnostics.
Step 7. Relays diagnostics – Press the down arrow twice so RELAYS displays. Then press the enter button to begin diagnostics. RLY 1 OFF will display on the controller. Press enter so the green power light turns on and the display reads RLY 1 ON. Then press the down arrow so RLY 2 OFF displays. Press the enter button so the display reads RLY 2 ON and the green heat on light turns on. Then press the down button arrow until you reach RLY 5 OFF on the controller. Then press enter so it reads RLY 5 ON and the red high-limit light turns on. If any of these fail to come on, there could be an issue with one of the relays. Press exit cool to finish this portion of diagnostics.Â
Step 8. Set the clock – Press the down arrow 3 times till CLOCK displays on the controller and then press enter. You can set the time here. Press the exit cool button once you’re finished.
Step 9. Flash text – Press the down arrow button so FLASH displays on the controller. Then press enter so FLASH OK displays. This tests the memory card on the board. If the display doesn’t read OK, there could be an issue. Press the exit cool button to finish this test.
Step 10. USB test- Press the down arrow button so USB displays and then press enter. This will test if the USB is working. Press exit cool once you’re finished testing.
Step 11. Sound diagnostics – Press the down arrow button so SOUND displays. Then press the enter button to test the sounds. The different sound volumes will play from the control to verify they all work. Press exit cool once you verify all sound volumes are working.
Step 12. Exit hardware diagnostics – Press the down arrow 4 times till DISPLAY shows again on the display. Press exit cool button once more, then press the down arrow button till EXIT displays. Press the enter button to exit.Â
