How to Replace Trane Rooftop Unit Belts

When it comes to HVAC equipment, customers require a service tech to perform maintenance on their units. This sometimes includes a simple swapping of components. Before you get to the job site, it can help to learn or refresh on the procedure so you’re ready to go as soon as you get up on the roof. So take a second to gather your tools and review this guide on how to replace Trane rooftop unit belts so you’re ready to go.

Belt Replacement

The belts on an RTU should be changed seasonally or if dry rot is present.

  • Step 1. Start by powering down the unit and removing the panels that are covering the blower assembly. This will give you access to the belt.
  • Step 2. It’s good practice to always inspect the belt of the RTU you’re working on. Check it for cracks, dry rot and other damages that would require it to be replaced.
  • Step 3. Loosen the two bolts mounting the blower motor. This will make it so you can slide the motor and give yourself some play to take off the belt.
  • Step 4. While sliding the motor to create some slack, roll the belt off of the pulleys.
  • Step 5. To begin installing the new belt, put the motor and mounting plate back in position and slightly tighten the bolts. You don’t want them so tight you can’t get the new belt on, but not too loose that it will just move freely as you install.
  • Step 6. Put the new belt on by starting with the small pulley first and then walk it on to the larger pulley
  • Step 7. Finish securing the motor mounting plate by fully tightening the bolts
  • Step 8. Always check that everything is properly done after replacing a part to avoid getting a call back. Check for deflection and that the pulleys are lined up.
  • Step 9. Button up the unit by reinstalling all panels, cleaning up your workspace and power equipment up.
