Understanding how equipment works can help you with diagnostics and repairs as a service technician. This guide will walk you through The Whalen Company fan coil order of operations so you can have the information you need to get the job done.
Fan Coil Heating Order of Operations
The process will vary depending on water temperature when using a fan coil for heating.
Hot Water in the Pipes
Step 1. A call comes from the thermostat – To start the operation of the fan coil, the thermostat will call for heating.
Step 2. Aquastat is powered – The call from the thermostat for heat sends power to the aquastat.Â
Step 3. Damper movements – The face damper will open and the bypass damper will close. Â
Step 4. Air moves – Air is drawn in and through the coil. Thus the air will be heated, pass through the unit and come out the discharge.Â
Cold Water in the Pipes
Step 1. A call comes from the thermostat – To start the operation of the fan coil, the thermostat will call for heating.
Step 2. Aquastat is powered – The call from the thermostat for heat sends power to the aquastat.Â
Step 3. Damper movements – The face damper will close and the bypass damper will open.  Â
Step 4. Electric heat is supplied – Electric heat will engage and we get heat from the electric heat relay.Â
Fan Coil Cooling Order of Operations
Step 1. A call comes from the thermostat – To start the operation of the fan coil, the thermostat will call for cooling.
Step 2. Aquastat is powered – The call from the thermostat for cooling sends power to the aquastat.Â
Step 3. Damper movements – When cold water is in the pipes, the face damper will open and the bypass damper will close and you get cooling.
