Component identification is vital for a tech learning to work on new HVAC equipment. This guide for The Whalen Company heat pump solid state safety control board terminal identification can help you get a more advanced understanding of the board and how it plays a role into the order of operations.
This board is commonly found on The Whalen Company water-source heat pumps.
The Whalen Company Heat Pump SS Safety Control Board Terminals
24 volt common terminal and they are common to each other
ALR
1
Alarm contact which is a dry contact
R
2
24 volt power and are common to each other
CC
1
Compressor contact which sends power down to the chassis from compressor contactor
HPS
2
High pressure return and high pressure 24 volt power out
Y
1
Receives call from thermostat
WV
1
Water valve that upon a call from the thermostat, sends power to actuator valve in chassis if it’s equipped
LPS
1
Low pressure return
The Whalen Company Heat Pump SS Safety Control Board Jumpers
At the edge of the board, there are jumpers. These determine the temperature range of the water temp safety and the freeze temp safety
RTN TEMPjumper – This is the freeze sensor for the thermistor located on the suction line before the compressor. It’s set at 32 degrees when set from the factory.
WATER TEMP jumper – The water temperature jumper is set at 36 degrees when set at the factory.Â
Alarm jumper – When the alarm jumper is in the pulse position it will send an audible clicking sound.
Test mode jumper – When this jumper is off, the unit operates as normal. If it’s put in on, it will operate with canceling anti-short cycling protection for a period of 1 hour upon start up.Â
The Whalen Company Heat Pump SS Safety Control Board LEDs & Fault Codes
There are two LED lights on the control board.
LED 2 – This is for the power and when the unit is operating properly, it lights up green.
LED 1 – This is a status light. It blinks red for fault codes.
What Do The Whalen Company Heat Pump LED Fault Codes Mean
1 blink – High pressure fault
2 blinks – Low pressure fault
3 blinks – Freeze sensor fault
4 blinks – Condensate overflow sensor fault
5 blinks – Brown out because the board is receiving less than 19 volts
6 blinks – Water temperature fault
