How to Replace a Manitowoc Ice Thickness Probe

To make the perfect ice, components need to be in working order. A vital one for ice machines is the ice thickness probe. If you’ve taken a service call and your diagnostics determined that part has failed, you need to make the swap. If you’ve already ordered the genuine OEM part but aren’t sure what the steps are to switch it out, we’ve got you covered. This guide will walk you through how to replace a Manitowoc ice thickness probe so you can ensure your customer is able to keep making quality ice.

Supplies

Ice Thickness Probe Replacement

  • Step 1. Power down the unit – Before beginning any part replacement on commercial kitchen equipment, it’s vital to turn off and unplug the unit first.
  • Step 2. Remove panels – To better access the probe, open the front panel, take off the top panel and slide off the side panel covering the control board
  • Step 3. Access the control board – The board has a box covering it once the panel is removed. Use your screwdriver to remove the box and gain access to the board.
  • Step 4. Disconnect the probe – A wire is connecting the ice thickness probe to the control board. While holding the board steady, unplug the probe.
  • Step 5. Access the probe – To get to the probe, you need to remove the water curtain by pressing in on the side to release the pins on both sides.
  • Step 6. Remove the probe – To remove the old probe, squeeze the pins together at the top and pull it out. Remember to pull the wire out with the probe.
  • Step 7. Install the new probe – Seat the new probe by pinching the pins together and ensuring they properly rest in the bracket. Then run the wire back down to the control board and plug it in.
  • Step 8. Adjust the probe – To ensure the newly installed part has the right bridge thickness, make adjustments as needed.
  • Step 9. Button up the unit – Reassemble all panels before putting the unit back into operation.

How to Adjust a Manitowoc Ice Thickness Probe

After installing a new probe, you’ll need to make adjustments to ensure the proper bridge thickness.

  • Step 1. Measure current thickness – Use a 3/16” allen wrench and put it behind the probe. Then press on it and the probe should just touch the wrench.
  • Step 2. Adjust the probe – If you determine the probe needs adjusting, there’s a screw you can turn. If you turn it counterclockwise, it’ll move closer to the evaporator coil, and clockwise moves it away. Be sure to hold the probe steady while making these adjustments.
