How to Replace an Ice-O-Matic GEM & MFI Ice Machine Gearbox

Doing a part replacement right the first time will save you trips back to a customer. The best way to ensure you’re getting the job done correctly is by following the help of a handy guide. So if you need to know how to replace an Ice-O-Matic GEM and MFI ice machine gearbox, you’ve come to the right place. This video guide will show you how to remove the old one and install the new one.

Gearbox Replacement

Removing the Old Part

  • Step 1. Remove the evaporator assembly – Take the evaporator assembly out of the ice machine. Be sure to consult the service manual for more detailed instructions on removing it.
  • Step 2. Remove the auger – Loosen the top nut and all screws securing the auger in place. You can then lift the auger up and out of the evaporator assembly.
    • Note: If the unit isn’t properly maintained the auger may be more difficult to take out. Use a slide hammer to help in those situations.
  • Step 3. Remove the insulation – Unwrap the bottom insulation to remove it from the assembly.
  • Step 4. Remove the evaporator – Loosen the 4 bolts and then lift the evaporator up and off the assembly.
  • Step 5. Replace additional components – With the evaporator out of the way, inspect the top gasket, watershed and drip pan and verify those don’t need to be replaced as well.
  • Step 6. Remove the gear motor – Loosen the 4 bolts with a quarter inch nut driver and lift the gear motor up and off the assembly.

Installing the New Part

  • Step 7. Prepare to install the new motor – Verify the gasket and watershed are in place. If new ones were installed, make sure this has been done properly before putting on the new motor to the assembly.
  • Step 8. Install the new motor – Take the new gear motor and put it onto the gearbox. Secure it with the screws once it’s seated. You can see through the vent holes where the screws need to go to line them up properly.
  • Step 9. Reinstall the evaporator – Install either the old or new drip pan onto the assembly. Then install the evaporator on top of that. Secure it with the bolts once it’s seated.
  • Step 10. Reinstall the insulation – Wrap the insulation back around the base of the evaporator once all the bolts are finished being tightened.
  • Step 11. Reinstall the auger – You can then reinstall the auger into the evaporator assembly.
  • Step 12. Button up the unit – Once the assembly is finished being put back together, reinstall it into the unit. Install any panels that were removed so the unit is ready to go back into service.
