How to Splice a TurboChef RTD Probe Wire

For replacements, repairs and more, you may need to perform some sort of retrofit to ensure old components are compatible with current updates to equipment. In this guide, we’ll show you how to splice a TurboChef RTD probe wire so you can finish the repair and ensure everything is properly connected.

This procedure is applicable to most TurboChef rapid cook ovens, such as the Bullet or ENCORE, i3, i5, Sota or i1, Single or Double Batch and the ECO

Supplies

Splicing a TurboChef RTD Probe Wire

Always ensure equipment is powered down and disconnected before beginning repairs.

  • Step 1. Disconnect the RTD – Disconnect the old RTD from the wiring harness at the molex plug. Then you can get your new RTD to start splicing.
    • Note: The wiring insulation on the RTD varies.
  • Step 2. Remove the RTD molex – You need to remove the molex plug from the new RTD probe. Use wire strippers or side cutters to completely cut off the plug.
  • Step 3. Strip the RTD wires – Now that the plug is removed, the wires from the new RTD need to be stripped. You need about a ¼” of wire exposed and can do so with your wire strippers.
    • Note: Be careful with the braided style insulation to ensure you get all of it removed.
  • Step 4. Install the wago connector – Open up both sides of one of the wago connectors by pulling up on the little orange clamp. Then take one side of the RTD and place it into the open side of the connector. It doesn’t matter which side of the RTD you insert as this isn’t a directional process. Make sure the connection does go all the way though the silver bar but the insulation isn’t caught underneath the silver bar. Then, close the connection on just one side of the connector. Now repeat the process with the other side of the RTD and second wago connector.
  • Step 5. Prep the wire harness – The wire harness you need to connect the RTD to should have a molex plug and three wires. This is standard in all TurboChef ovens but the colors of the wires will vary. Typically it will have two of the same color and one that is a different color. To start prepping the harness, cut off the molex connection.
  • Step 6. Strip the wire harness – The wires should be 20 gauge, so you can use that section of your wire strippers to strip the three wires of the harness. Make sure the conductors are still intact and that none were ripped or damaged. Try to expose the same length for all three wires.
  • Step 7. Add connectors to the harness – To add the wiring harness to the wago connectors, you first need to twist the two same colored wires together. Thus leaving you with only two connection points. The two twist together wires will go into one wago connector, and the single wire will go in its own connector. It doesn’t matter which goes where since it’s not a directional process.
