Raypak Pool Heater Troubleshooting

Raypak pool heaters are workhorses in commercial pool and spa systems, but when something’s off the heater will let you know. This Raypak pool heater troubleshooting guide has insight into common heater issues and what’s usually behind them. Whether you’re tracking down nuisance shutdowns, poor heating performance, or signs of overheating, this article is meant to help you diagnose problems faster, avoid repeat failures, and keep commercial equipment running safely and efficiently.

Why Is My Raypak Pool Heater Making a Harmonic or Whining Noise?

  • Debris or blockage in system – Find the blockage and remove it, then flush the system and clean it thoroughly.
  • Debris in gas line – Remove the debris or blow out the gas line.
  • Low flow – Clean the heat exchanger and check the pool pH and total alkalinity.

Why Does My Raypak Pool Heater Keep Turning On and Off?

  • Dirty filter – Clean or replace the filter.
  • Low water level in pool – Raise the water level.
  • External bypass setting out of adjustment – Adjust the bypass settings.
  • Pressure switch out of adjustment – Adjust the pressure switch.

Lime or Scale Buildup Forming Inside the Raypak Heat Exchanger

  • Incorrect water chemistry – Check for chemical imbalances in the water. Adjust the water chemistry as needed.
  • Bypassing too much water – Inspect the bypass for movement. If there’s no movement, replace the bypass.

Raypak Pool Heater Sooting Problems

  • High flow rates – Reduce the flow rate by adding a manual bypass valve. Adjust the manual bypass valve until the heater outlet water temperature is between 105°F and 110°F (40.5°C and 43.3°C).
  • Insects or debris clogging burner intake ports – Clean the burners and remove any debris.

Raypak Pool Heater Pilot Outage or Weak Flame Signal Error

  • Low gas pressure – Adjust the gas pressure.
  • Restricted/dirty pilot – Clean the pilot and/or the electrode.
  • Weak pilot generator – Replace the pilot.

Raypak Pool Heater Producing a Yellow, Lazy Flame

  • Low gas pressure – Adjust the gas pressure.
  • Insects or debris clogging burner intake ports – Clean the burners and remove any debris.

Raypak Pool Heater Outer Jacket Overheating or Paint Blistering

  • Shipping damage or improper combustion – Replace the refractory panels.
  • Heat exchanger has excessive sooting – Determine cause of sooting and correct

Raypak Pool Heater Taking Too Long to Heat Pool or Spa

  • Undersized heater – Calculate the heating capacity of the heater or refer to the heater sizing chart.
  • Filter not running long enough – Reset the time clock.
  • Dirty filter – Thoroughly clean the filter.

Raypak Pool Heater Leaking at the Well (Sensor or Header Leak)

  • Overacid – Replace the well and maintain the proper water chemistry.

Raypak Pool Heater Leaking at the Heat Exchanger

  • Overacid – Replace the heat exchanger and maintain the proper water chemistry.

Raypak Pool Heater Gasket Brittle and Leaking Due to Overheating

  • Heater running after pump shuts off – Adjust the pressure switch as needed.
  • Refractory damage – Replace the refractory.
  • Sooted heater – Refer to the heater sooting section above and correct the issue.
