    Ok,

So I realize how bizarre this question will be in advance, and although I don’t have all the information I don’t think it will be very relevant anyways.

I’m heading to a call later this week, for a misbehaving toaster that was sold used.  Its a Star / Holman QCS 300 if I remember right, maybe a 600h.  Won’t matter really.

Customers complaint is that it is burning the crusts of the bread, but not toasting the middle portion.

This toaster has 4 tube elements top and bottom, how on earth could it be that it is burning the crusts and not toasting the middle of the bread on any speed or wattage setting?

I’ve asked he is using your typical everyday grocery store bread not something homemade or some other oddity.

Is there any chance someone else has heard of this before?  Any suggestions, or something I’m just not thinking of?  My logic says the elements mounted on top and below the conveyor would have to cook the bread evenly and it isn’t possible to only burn the crusts while leaving the centre untoasted unless something is obstructing the lamps, which he assures me there is not.

Sugars on the outside of the bread will do this.  But more likely is the heat is to high and the conveyor speed to fast.  Look for a shine on the outside of the bread.

    So,

I thought I’d update this with the result as I have never heard or seen this before.

This unit has glass tube element heaters, these are the ones that look like they have a spring wound up inside them.

As this toaster was in storage for some time, it got moved around allot, and at some point got set down on its side, where it lay for a long time.

What happens is those elements start to sag to one side, and stretch the coil out.  Now when you pull it out of storage and set it upright the “coil” is stretched out on one side and clumped up on the other, providing extremely uneven heat and burning on one side of the bread only. (not top or bottom literally side)

Weirdest thing Ive seen with a simple toaster.

Good to know, toasters can do weird things sometimes.

Like exploding when you put a fork in a residential one.

    Odd little things.
