How to Install an Ice-O-Matic Ice Machine

Making sure an ice machine is installed correctly is the first step to a proper-working unit. This is why Ice-O-Matic insists that a certified technician handles this step for their customers. Our installation guide will show you how to install an Ice-O-Matic ice machine so it runs the way it should. This guide covers the installation process for Ice-O-Matic GEM-MFI Series ice makers.

Ice-O-Matic Location Tips

These units are meant to be installed in a controlled indoor environment. Choose a space that has enough space around it to be accessible for service when needed. It’s recommended there be a minimum of 6 inches at the back of the unit for air circulation on air cooled models.

Storage Bin Set Up

  • Step 1. Remove the storage bin from the packaging.
  • Step 2. Tip it on its back and remove the skid to install the legs into the threaded holes on the bottom.
  • Step 3. Return the bin to the upright position. Make sure when placing the bin into the final position for installation, lift it there, don’t push it. This could cause damage to the legs.

Ice-O-Matic Ice Machine Installation

  • Step 4. Using a mechanical lift, lift the ice machine high enough to install it on top of the bin.
  • Step 5. Once on the bin, make sure everything is lined up and even with the back side.
  • Step 6. Using the hardware provided, secure the ice machine in place.
  • Step 7. Remove the front panel and take off any shipping blocks or packaging materials.

Installing the Roof Condenser

  • Step 8. Install and attach the remote condenser to the roof using the methods of construction that conform to the local building codes.
  • Step 9. Have an electrician connect the remote condenser fan motor to the ice machine using the junction box at the back of the ice machine.

Installing the Coupling

  • Step 10. Remove the protector caps and plugs. Wipe the seats and threaded surfaces with a clean cloth.
  • Step 11. Lubricate the inside of the couplings.
  • Step 12. Position the fittings on the correct connections on the remote condenser and ice machine.
    • The 1/2 inch discharge line (Schrader valve end) goes to the remote condenser fitting marked “Discharge Line”.
    •  The 3/8 inch liquid line (Schrader valve end) goes to the remote condenser fitting marked “Liquid Line”.
    •  The 1/2 inch discharge line goes to the ice machine fitting marked “Discharge Line”.
    •  The 3/8 inch liquid line goes to the ice machine fitting marked “Liquid Line”.
  • Step 13. Begin to tighten the couplings by hand until  they’re secure.
  • Step 14. Using two wrenches, tighten the couplings. Use one wrench to hold the tubing still and the other to tighten the swivel nut.
  • Step 15. After the connections are made and the king valve has been opened, check for leaks.
