Adjusting Kolpak Walk-In Cooler Door Hinges & Closers
Kolpak is one of the top manufacturers for walk-in refrigeration. That's why many service companies regularly deploy highly skilled technicians to install or repair these units. Like most Welbilt equipment, only trained technicians are asked to conduct work on refrigerators and freezers, including repairs to the door. This guide shows technicians how to adjust Kolpak walk-in cooler door hinges and closers properly.
Safety Precautions
Kolpak requires this service to be done only by trained and qualified technicians familiar with these units. Equipment operators and owners should contact a local factory authorized service agent to conduct these repairs.
Before a tech tackles either task, they should do the following:
- Check that all field wiring follows equipment requirements and applies to local and national codes.
- Disconnect all power sources before servicing the unit.
- Wear protective gloves to prevent injury from the sharp edges on sheet metal and coil surfaces.
- Wear goggles or other eye protection during repairs.
Procedure for Adjusting Door Hinges
The written instructions and video below show you how to adjust the door hinges on Kolpak walk-in units.
- Step 1. Pry the hinge cover off with a screwdriver.
- Step 2. Loosen all the lag screws on the hinge using the appropriate ratchet or hex driver. Do not completely unfasten them.
- Step 3. Turn the center adjustment screw clockwise to pull the door toward the hinge. Turn it counterclockwise to pull the door away from the hinge. Make sure the door is parallel to the door section.
- Step 4. Tighten the lag screws once the door is properly parallel to the door section. Don't overtighten the screws.
- Step 5. Pop the hinge cover back into place.

Procedure for Adjusting the Door Closers
Kolpak has multiple types of spring-action and hydraulic door closers, but the procedures apply all variations. The written instructions and video below show you how to adjust the closer on models with or without a cover.
Adjustment with a Cover
- Step 1. Loosen the screws attached to the hook on the door panel.
- Step 2. Adjust the hook up or down to the correct height. The roller should just clear the hook's outer lip.
- Step 3. Use a screwdriver to pry off the closer cover. Then, loosen the screws attached to the closer.
- Step 4. Adjust the closer to the correct height. You might need a hammer to lightly tap for adjustment.
- Step 5. Once adjusted properly, tighten the screws. Then, add the cover back atop the closer.
- Step 6. Ensure that the roller just clear the hook's outer lip.
Adjustment without a Cover
- Step 1. Loosen the screws attached to the hook on the door panel.
- Step 2. Adjust the hook up or down to the correct height. The roller should just clear the hook's outer lip.
- Step 3. Pry the closer off the mounting bracket. Loosen the mounting screws to adjust to the proper height.
- Step 4. Tighten the mounting screws and place the closer back onto the mounting bracket.
- Step 5. Ensure that the roller just clear the hook's outer lip. Also, make sure the roller slides inside the hook.
