  • How to Remove Reach In Freezer Door With Spring Loaded Hinges

Posted by EagleHeart on September 6, 2023 at 11:24 am

Hello All, I volunteered to help a food pantry to setup a couple of new reach in freezers. The problem is that the doorway to the pantry is 32″ wide and the freezers are 32 3/4 inches wide, so I have to take the doors off. See this URL for pics and a description. https://www.coolerdepotusa.com/products/details/101115/nsf-54-inch-2-door-reach-in-commercial-ss-freezer-c55

This is a simple enough process. I remove the top valance and the lower louvers to expose the hinge bolts. But, the hinges are spring loaded to force the doors to close automatically. I’m afraid that if I merely remove the bolts the hinge will “unwind” the spring with unknown consequences.

So… has anyone dealt with spring loaded hinges? Any recommendation as to how to hold them in place while I remove the doors to slip the freezer through the doorway?

Have changed many of them. First you have to determine if the sprung hinge is the top or bottom. Then look for a cap and lock pin. Some have a Allen to preload and a pin you insert to hold position. Others require a good pin punch to place in holes to remove the holding pin. These cabinets are not like a Delfield, Bev-Air or True as they are Chinese copy’s. So don’t expect a lot of service back-up. If you go to RHS and find a copy of the hinge you have it made. They carry the full Kasson line of refrigeration hinges. Most manufacturer’s use Kasson hardware.

BTW, most of todays hinges are ramp style and use gravity to close the doors.

Thank you for this. These are definitely not ramp style gravity hinges… the doors don’t lift and the top hinge pin is square and fitted to a square hole in the hinge bracket fastened to the freezer body.

I appreciate the information as it gives me the confidence that I can handle this without screwing things up… I’m a very good handyman.

    Cheers.
