Any particular brands or thermometers one should not buy.

I currently keep a ncvt-4ir made by Klein, in my pocket. i like it for quick pipe temps and griddles.

Of course, my usage is different, but I’m a big fan of this cheap thing I found on Amazon

Temperature IR and probe, NCV and humidity. Only downside is the limited range of the probe.

Although I’ve owned a few IR thermometers, I don’t use them when accuracy is important since they tend to NOT be accurate when pointed a shiny metal surfaces.

Checking pipes is a good use, especially when testing live steam system traps.

I mainly used the IR for sensing electrical connections while equipment is running.  Although a FLIR is better for that, more fun…but WAY more expensive.

For calibrating griddles, fryers & ovens, I use probes made by Cooper-Atkins which are designed for that.
