When plugged in, turning on kettle switch blows GFI circuit.

The heating element has probably gotten a short internally. Remove the kettle and open the bottom. Take a Ohm meter and check the element to ground. Also look for oil tracking around the high limit.

GFCI probably can’t handle it. Try to using it on a circuit that’s not GFI protected and see if it works.

CherlieH, GFI’s will take full circuit load, and only trip if there is a leakage to ground of 5 to 8 milliamps.(depending on the spec) It take a human 10 milliamps to “FEEL” the current. 25 to cause muscle seizure. And 30 to kill you. There are some situations that induced current losses from long runs will trip at higher amp loads. Why you want to place them as close to the load as possible. A quality ohm meter is the key here. Or a better yet a Megger.

I’ve had similar issues with popcorn machines before. One time, I rented a popcorn machine for a party from https://sizzleyourevents.com/popcorn-machine-rental-montreal/ , and when we first plugged it in, it tripped the circuit too! Turns out, it was just a bit too much for the outlet we were using.

What worked for us was switching to a different outlet that had more capacity, and then it ran perfectly. Once it was up and running, the smell of fresh popcorn was amazing, and everyone loved it. If you’re still having trouble, maybe check the wattage and try a different circuit.
