Southbend Oven Temps off 50*
Posted by Stew5 on April 1, 2025 at 4:18 pmHello, I have a Southbend oven model X460DD-2GR that has two ovens and both are off 50* or more either way. Is there an adjustment on this thermostat or do we replace it outright?

First, check that the sensing bulb is properly mounted and in the correct position. Most south Bends I’ve worked on were very good at holding temp to a close tolerance due to their varying fire rate. Yes it can be adjusted. But I have to know what valve you have. If you pull the knob off and take a picture of the stem and center I can give you more. Also when calibrating, you should place a pan of water in the oven to create a load. You also need a good thermocouple and temp unit so that you don’t open the door when calibrating.

Here is your calibration stem. if you are fifty degrees off, pop the cap or chrome cover off of the dial use a precision screwdriver to hold that calibration stem in place. turn the dial, while making sure the calibration stem doesn’t move, to the temperature that you are satisfying at. then compare the oven set point to your thermometer. repeat this at a few deferent temperatures making sure to let the oven cycle a few times at each set point.

I forgot to mention that with South Bend ovens they have a bypass so that when there is no call for heat the burner goes down to a low flame of about 1/8 inch on the burners. That must be adjusted before thermostat calibration. Rarely after bypass adjustment does one need to recalibrate.

The bypass valve adjustment is on the lower right of the valve with a black head. It normally changes when the supply regulator is not set to the correct pressure, or the therm value of the gas supplied changes. ie; BTU’s per cubic ft. One should always check with a Manometer that the supply is correct.
