Why would the blade all of a sudden move backwards

Because the motor is running backwards. What model slicer and what power does it have. Has any work been done on it recently?

Replace the motor, there is no wiring configuration on the OEM Berkel motor that would allow it to run the wrong way. Either the motor is bad or it has been installed upside down, which would require a significant modification to the support brackets.
